Consumers are Unaware of Common ATM Security Threats
According to Wincor Nixdorf Survey

Majority of consumers would switch banks to get more secure ATMs

Wincor Nixdorf, one of the world’s leading providers of IT solutions and services to retailers and retail banks, announced that, according to its recent survey, consumers are largely unaware of major security threats at their ATMs – but would switch banks if another institution demonstrated that it provided more secure ATMs.

The study polled the knowledge, preferences and trends around ATM security of consumers based in the United States. The survey revealed that, despite an overwhelming concern about ATM fraud, the majority of consumers are unaware of popular fraud tactics, such as ATM card skimming. Skimming causes $350,000 in monetary losses each day and is occurring five times more frequently this year than ever before, according to the Secret Service.

Additionally, the majority of consumers agreed that if another bank offered significantly more advanced ATM security, they would switch banks.

The ATM has become the primary customer touch point for many financial institutions, so it is critical that retail banks offer the most sophisticated security software to protect their customers,” said David Hadesty, VP of Product Management for Wincor Nixdorf’s U.S. Banking Division. “Now, more than ever – if you are a retail bank that does not make investments in advanced ATM security, you are at risk of losing both money and customers.”

Wincor Nixdorf’s expanded security solution portfolio offers protection from high-tech thieves to counteract the growing number of manipulation attempts at self-service systems. The new Anti-Skimming II Module and the use of optical monitoring technology mean that in the future, fraudulent attacks on ATMs can be effectively prevented. These new components are part of the extensive ProTect portfolio, which offers retail banks solutions for the comprehensive protection of their processes and external delivery channels.

The Anti-Skimming II Module thwarts attempts to steal card data at ATMs that take place when skimming devices are attached to the card entry slot and the customer’s PIN is stolen. The module recognizes a wide variety of skimmers when they are mounted on the ATM, and disrupts them in their attempts to read card data. If a suspicious device is detected, the system initiates a silent alarm, and follow-up actions, such as video monitoring and recording, can also be triggered.

The rising number of attacks on ATMs has also meant an increase in the variety of manipulation attempts. Optical Security Guard – Wincor Nixdorf’s optimal system monitoring solution – protects the new CINEO systems from a wide array of attacks. Intelligent recognition processes mean that criminal alterations to the device, such as keypad overlays, skimming devices, hidden or disguised cameras, or other changes – such as those that enable cash trapping – are identified immediately.

Wincor Nixdorf’s sophisticated ATM software allows bank managers to monitor and control their ATM network anytime, from anywhere – providing assurance that their ATMs are secure at all times, while reducing time and expense.

The full results of the survey are available here: http://bit.ly/dRgoum

The 20 innovative companies honoured this year by US magazine Banking Technology News in the 9th annual issue of “The Innovators” have one thing in common: they offer the kind of risk-taking, forward-thinking products and services required by the financial services industry to leave the financial crisis behind and bring the next level of value to customers. Wincor Nixdorf was one of the honored companies, joining a prestigious line-up that includes global leaders in the retail banking and financial services industry.

The new Mobile Money ATM solution powered by Wincor Nixdorf delivers an answer to two challenges facing banks: how to squeeze more functionality out of their ATMs; and how to enable transactions via mobile phones.

Together with Sicap, a leading provider of mobile software solutions and a subsidiary of Switzerland’s leading telecom provider Swisscom, Wincor Nixdorf now offers an ATM designed for a range of Mobile Money services, including deposits and withdrawals. Under the partnership, Wincor Nixdorf delivers the terminals together with the company’s server-based software application, and Sicap designs, customizes and implements the service to meet the individual requirements of mobile network operators worldwide.

The solution also has potential applications for banks. Instead of building out their own ATM networks to offer Mobile Money services, they can use their existing ATMs running the Wincor Nixdorf mobile payment solution PC/E Mobile Transaction Services.

For a cash remittance via an ATM, a sender simply enters the phone number of the recipient and a security PIN (personal identification number) on the terminal’s touch screen and inserts the amount into the machine. The recipient can withdraw cash from any participating ATM. Or a bank customer can send the payment instructions via mobile phone, allowing the recipient to pick up the cash at the terminal.

“Demand for these kinds of services will grow as people become more accustomed to using their mobile phones for payments,” said Nicole Sturgill, research director at TowerGroup.

“Mobile Money is a growth market and of particular interest to banks and mobile network operators at the same time,” said Stefan Auerbach, Executive Vice President Banking at Wincor Nixdorf. “Our innovative, cross-sector solution offers banks an opportunity to play an active role in this new market.”

Wincor Nixdorf is an active member of various standardization committees, in part to meet the goal of ensuring that cashless payment solutions can be integrated in POS software solutions more easily in the future. As a founding member of the non-profit Belgian standardization organization EPASOrg A.I.S.B.L., Wincor Nixdorf contributed significantly to the EPAS Retailer Protocol which – after four years of specification work – was published in February for public consultation on the organization’s official website. For six months now, Jürgen Manske, Solution Manager at Wincor Nixdorf, has been Chairman of the Board of the organization. The Electronic Protocols Application Software (EPAS) project is part of the SEPA activities that were launched to standardize cashless payment transactions in Europe.

The Retailer Protocol joins the Acquirer and the Terminal Management Protocol in the trio of EPAS protocols aimed at standardizing EFT solutions. Wincor Nixdorf was one of the masterminds in particular behind the specification of the EPAS Retailer Protocol, whose technical feasibility has already been proven in a showcase. The EPAS Retailer Protocol has been designed to be used internationally and across all sectors, making it the first European standard for payment solutions that is especially suitable for multinational chain store companies. Due to the strict separation of POS and payment applications, the Retailer Protocol provides flexibility and investment security for all the companies involved, whether retailers, service station operators, POS and EFT solution providers, service providers or banks.

This not only simplifies the integration of existing card-based payment solutions in the POS system, but also of innovative payment methods such as contactless, biometric or mobile solutions. In addition, the high level of security that banks and credit card companies require of their EFT solutions is much easier and faster to achieve with integrated POS solutions.
Wincor Nixdorf has many years of experience in specifying these standards and implementing them in its solutions for international retail companies and service station operators. One example is the O.P.I. interface, which was specified in agreement with the IFSF (International Forecourt Standards Forum) and is an integral part of all POS and store solutions for retailers and service stations.

Wincor Nixdorf sees EPAS as an opportunity for access to an official standard platform for the first time in Europe. “We’ll be implementing the EPAS standard in our solutions as quickly as possible, so that our customers will be able to integrate cashless payment solutions and customer loyalty applications far more easily in the future,” says Leyla Feghhi, who heads up Retail Marketing at Wincor Nixdorf.

Today at Mobile World Congress 2010, Sicap, the Swisscom owned mobile solutions pioneer, and Wincor Nixdorf, the leading Automated Teller Machine (ATM) manufacturer and IT solutions provider to the retail banking sector, unveiled ATMs specially designed for unprecedented mobile money services, including cash-in / cash-out transfer facilities. Jointly designed and developed by Sicap and Wincor Nixdorf to install in retail outlets or offsite prime locations, the machines are set to kick-start the usage of ATMs for mobile network operators and mark an important evolution in how mobile customers interact with their operator.

“Being first to market with an m-transaction ATM confirms our pioneering spirit, our server-side expertise and our ability to deliver user-friendly services in their regional context. We are proud to partner with Wincor Nixdorf as a reputed leader in ATM technologies to achieve this.” said Jürgen Samuel, Sicap CEO
Mr. Stefan Auerbach – Executive Vice President of Wincor Nixdorf Banking added that “mobile money solutions powered by Wincor Nixdorf financial services expertise will give operators a clear competitive advantage and customers a consistent and worthwhile service experience. With its expertise in the network operator market, Sicap is an ideal partner for Wincor Nixdorf to expand our successful multichannel software approach to the benefit of mobile carriers.”

The ATMs have initially been configured for three high-demand solutions: mobile cash remittance, cash topup and self-service subscription management. Sicap and Wincor Nixdorf have jointly pioneered design and development of the three solutions whereby Wincor Nixdorf manufactures the ATMs and their server-based software, while Sicap architects and implements the service to the operator environment.

Cash Remittance
The Sicap and Wincor Nixdorf Cash Remittance ATM solution offers mobile phone users easy cash–in/cash-out transfers. The sender simply enters the phone number of the recipient and a security PIN on the touch screen and inserts the amount into the ATM. The recipient can withdraw the money from any participating ATM. The ATM Cash Remittance solution responds to strong demand in markets where mobile phone accounts largely outnumber bank accounts. The convenience factor is a clear benefit compared to traditional over-the-counter money transfer mechanisms, and attractive commission charges mean that even low-denomination person-to-person transactions are feasible.

Cash Topup
The brand-new Sicap and Wincor Nixdorf Cash Topup ATM solution reduces operators prepaid reload commissions down to zero. Any user can topup a mobile account balance simply by inserting cash into the specially designed, operator-branded ATM. The Sicap server updates the mobile account in the operator’s billing system and any m-wallet server, without the need to involve a banking or ATM network infrastructure

Self-Service Kiosk
The Sicap and Wincor Nixdorf Self-Service Kiosk ATM solution provides touch screen allowing mobile customers to manage their own subscription, mobile device and their accompanying services. The kiosk automates routine shop operations and can be customised according to regional market specificities. Installed in operator retail outlets or any other indoor, outdoor or offsite prime locations , the touch screen menus can offer services such as prepaid topups, cash payment of phone bills, money remittance, Value Added Service discovery, promotions and device configuration. The subscriber may request direct assistance from retail staff or remote assistance via a link to a customer care agents.

New solution portfolio for cash cycle management

Cash continues to be the number one payment medium. “Nine of ten payment transactions worldwide are made with cash. Our estimates show that this creates more than 300 billion dollars in costs, primarily for banks and retail businesses,” explains Eckard Heidloff, President and CEO of Wincor Nixdorf, at the opening of Wincor World 2010. The number of euro banknotes alone is growing at the rate of nine percent yearly according to the European Central Bank. On the whole, cash handling in Europe costs approximately 50 billion euros every year. Thus Heidloff presented a solution portfolio as the kickoff to Wincor World that makes the most of the common ground in cash handling processes at retail companies and banks, and takes a completely new approach. The portfolio, which Wincor Nixdorf is marketing under the name “Cash Cycle Management Solutions”, enables manual processes to be automated, with the result that bank and store employees no longer come into contact with cash. The results: maximum security, the greatest possible transparency, better processes and cost reductions of more than twenty percent.

Heidloff emphasized that Wincor Nixdorf continues to be a reliable and stable solution partner to banks and retailers. To be sure, the Group’s sales fell by six percent and its EBITA by thirteen percent year-on-year in the first quarter of the new fiscal year 2009/2010. And Heidloff added that Wincor Nixdorf expected sales and operating income to be down somewhat for the fiscal year as a whole, but not by more than in the last fiscal year 2008/2009, when sales fell by three percent and income by thirteen percent. The company’s objective is to remain stable throughout the crisis, while preparing for when the economy recovers in strength.

Wincor World with thirty partner exhibitors

Around 600 exhibits of IT solutions and services from Wincor Nixdorf and thirty partner exhibitors await visitors at Wincor World. The exhibition’s focal points are of strategic importance to banks and retail companies: offers for enhancing customer orientation at branches and stores, software platforms that map all processes at banks and retail companies, and solutions for protecting systems, networks and branch/store networks will all be on display. Automation solutions for bank branches and retail stores and an extended range of services, such as the assumption of responsibility for processing debit and credit card transactions, shows how well Wincor Nixdorf’s focus is anchored in the processes of retail companies and banks.

New systems with intelligent banknote storage concept

With its new Cash Cycle Management portfolio, Wincor Nixdorf aims to automate cash handling processes at banks and retail companies as completely as possible, ensure closed cash cycles and shorten the cash logistics chain. This is achieved by using systems in both banking and retailing that feature a uniform banknote storage concept that enables the exchange of storage media between devices from the new hardware family, CINEO. A memory chip in the storage unit stores information that is available at any time on both the level of cash inside and where and when the unit was used or opened. As a result, banknotes deposited at a bank branch’s counter and stored in intelligent storage units in an automated teller safe can be dispensed again at automated teller machines. Similarly, a closed cash cycle can be created in retailing between the POS zone and the store’s cash office, where, for example, the cash in the individual tills is counted. The banknote storage units used to store cash takings at a retail store can be transferred directly to nearby automated teller machines, thereby eliminating the need for the takings to be removed to a CiT operator’s cash center and processed there.

In a future scenario, cash centers, bank branches and retail stores will all be able to be integrated in the cycle. The core of this approach is that the automated filling and emptying of cash cassettes in the cash center’s sorting systems enables cross-sector cash cycle management.

For controlling cash handling processes from the store/branch to the central bank, Wincor Nixdorf offers Cash Cycle Management Base, a comprehensive software portfolio that allows banks and retail companies to manage and optimize these processes themselves. However, they can also turn over the control of their cash management to Wincor Nixdorf, because all of the functionalities in the software portfolio are also part of Wincor Nixdorf’s eServices Platform. As part of its comprehensive Managed Services portfolio, the company offers cash cycle management services such as forecasting and optimization of cash holdings or the complete control of CiT operators.

Wincor Nixdorf AG closed its first quarter of the current fiscal 2009/2010 with net sales and operating profit (EBITA) down 6% and 13% respectively on the same period in the preceding fiscal 2008/2009. Net sales for the Group, which specializes in IT solutions for the branch operations of banks and retailers, fell in the first three months to EUR607 million (previous year:
EUR646 million). EBITA was also lower at EUR49 million (EUR56 million). The EBITA margin fell accordingly to 8.1% (8.7%), while profit for the period declined 6% to EUR33 million (EUR35 million). Looking ahead at the rest of the fiscal year, President & CEO Eckard Heidloff pointed to the continued impact of the economic and financial crisis. “In the short term at least we expect the worldwide environment to remain challenging. Developments in the market and in our business are still difficult to predict,” he explained.
Against this background he sees the probability of fluctuations in business performance during the year and within regions. For fiscal 2009/2010 as a whole, Wincor Nixdorf anticipates a further decline in its net sales and operating profit, albeit no greater than that experienced in the last fiscal year (2008/2009: net sales – 3%, EBITA – 13%).

Heidloff also noted that at present it is not possible to identify any consistent trends in the IT solutions business for retail banks and retailers. Although capital expenditure on new systems to replace older IT infrastructure is being put back, he observed, companies are nevertheless investing in streamlining measures and process optimization. Regardless of economic developments in specific countries, he believes the individual financial strength and strategy of each company is now playing an increasingly important role. “We anticipate that the fundamental trends within our field of business will remain unchanged. However, at the moment it is not possible to predict when this will be translated into renewed growth.”

Wincor Nixdorf has prepared itself for the forthcoming challenges with its ProFuture program, whose aim is to improve internal processes and structures, as well as the company’s ability to perform successfully in its markets. Work on gradual implementation of the various measures and steps devised as part of the program began at the start of the fiscal year. The goal is not only to emerge in good shape from the crisis, but also to prepare the organization for the point when the economy as a whole picks up and stabilizes.

Net sales down in both segments – Uneven regional performance Net sales in the Banking segment ended the first quarter 8% lower at EUR419 million compared with the same quarter in the previous year (EUR456 million). Net sales generated in the Retail segment showed a small year-on- year decrease of 1% to EUR188 million (EUR190 million). Net sales in Germany for the first three months of the current fiscal year rose by 15% to EUR178 million (previous year: EUR155 million), thus accounting for 29% (previous
year: 24%) of total Group net sales. At EUR252 million (previous year:
EUR333 million), net sales in Europe (excluding Germany) showed a decline of 24% in the first quarter. This region contributed the largest part of total Group net sales at 42% (previous year: 52%). Net sales in the Asia/Pacific/Africa region fell slightly to end the quarter down 2% at EUR98 million (EUR100 million), taking the region’s share of total Group net sales to 16% (15%). In U.S. dollars, the Americas delivered a 53% increase in net sales over the reporting period, equivalent to a rise in euro terms of 36% to EUR79 million (EUR58 million), thus boosting the region’s share of total Group net sales to 13% (9%).

Growth in Software/Services and Hardware remains under pressure Net sales attributable to the Hardware business fell 13% to EUR326 million
(EUR373 million) in the first quarter of the current fiscal year compared with the same quarter in the previous year. By contrast, net sales from Software/Services showed a 3% rise to EUR281 million (EUR273 million). As a result, the share of total Group net sales attributable to the Hardware business stood at 54% (58%), while the share achieved by Software/Services climbed to 46% (42%).

For further details of results, please see the Group’s Interim Report for the First Quarter of 2009/2010.

The topic of cash cycle management will be the focus of Wincor World 2010, which will take place in Paderborn from January 26 to 28. At this event, Wincor Nixdorf invites IT decision-makers from all over the world to join in the discussion on IT solutions that enable the optimization of branch and store processes at retail banks and retail companies. The company and many of its partners will present solutions for hardware, software, service and professional services across an area of some 10,000 square meters. As in years past, a prominent feature of the event is the targeted transfer of know-how through a program of presentations.
The circulation of cash – which continues to be the leading payment medium – is the source of extensive manual work and high processing costs in addition to posing security risks. For this reason, Wincor Nixdorf is placing solutions for cash management at the heart of this year’s Wincor World. With its innovative, significantly expanded Cash Cycle Management Solutions portfolio, Wincor Nixdorf is presenting itself as an end-to-end supplier for the design of intelligent cash processes. A number of solution scenarios demonstrate how the redesign and automation of cash processes through innovative technologies can significantly increase efficiency, transparency and security. As a result, savings of more than twenty percent in the costs of cash processing can be achieved. Wincor Nixdorf’s approach rests on streamlining cash management in retail stores and banks, but beyond that it intelligently connects cash processes across sectors. The company will therefore present not just concrete solutions for cash processes in bank branches and stores, but also concepts for cross-sector cash cycle management.

Another focus of Wincor World will be software that supports the multichannel orientation of today’s retail banks and continually provides new services for customers and financial institutions. With the net-centric ProClassic/Enterprise Retail Banking Solution Suite (PC/E Suite), Wincor Nixdorf will demonstrate how the existing infrastructure of the Internet sales channel can be optimally implemented on Internet-capable mobile terminal devices, thus serving as an additional channel for end customers. The integrated technology approach means that existing business services can also be enabled for mobile use through the Suite’s software products PC/E Direct Marketing, PC/E Monitoring, PC/E Cash Management and PC/E Payment Services. Then, for example, real-time mobile monitoring of error and status reports from the self-service network will be possible on any mobile terminal device. But the platform’s multichannel approach means that these functionalities can also be offered for the other sales and service channels, such as self-service, the branch, and call centers.

Security is and will remain an important strategic topic for both financial institutions and retail businesses, in no small part because it is a key factor for business success in these two sectors. The extensive offer of ProTect security solutions covers single systems, entire stores or branches, and even cross-sector processes, and offers answers to a wide variety of attack strategies. From data and software security to cash security, identity and access control, and security monitoring, at Wincor World the visitor will find a wide variety of solutions that address all necessary aspects of a holistic security concept.

Banks and retail companies seeking to reopen, redesign, or optimize their branches or stores will also find solutions at Wincor World that help them achieve greater customer-orientation in their branches and stores. With the WIN@Branch portfolio for banks and the WIN@Store solutions for retailers, Wincor Nixdorf helps businesses ensure productive, efficient processes. The concept begins with consulting and an analysis of branch or store processes and the IT environment, and extends all the way to the operation of complete branch or store networks.

For the first time, Wincor Nixdorf will be presenting an integrated showcase on the topic of cashless payment. Visitors will discover how to organize and carry out transaction acceptance and the processing of cashless payments internationally, from the POS to the acquirer’s host, just the way this will be possible in the future within the framework of the SEPA stipulations.

Innovative checkout scenarios for a variety of retail segments are a focus of the portfolio of retail solutions: from mobile shopping to self-checkout and traditional staffed checkouts, visitors will discover how to improve customer service, optimize processes and reduce costs. In the case of traditional checkouts, Wincor Nixdorf demonstrates how the use of innovative technologies can reduce your total cost of ownership over the long term. This is made possible through improvements such as the use of 80PLUS power supply units, which achieve greater energy efficiency. Other improvements include the optimization of system reliability through the use of solid state storage technologies, plus enhanced service life and serviceability.

Another focal point is the TP Application Suite. As a fully-integrated software package at the store and enterprise levels, it controls all of a retail business’s store-specific processes. The spectrum of the software’s benefits ranges from control of the store landscape to new possibilities for enhancing customer loyalty to improvements in both customer service and work processes in the store. Particular attention will be given this year to the topic of customer loyalty. The software module TPLoyalty builds on numerous functions from TP Application Suite to form a flexible customer loyalty instrument with precise customer segmentation mechanisms, targeted campaigns and customer loyalty programs, as well as immediate controls of the effectiveness of individual promotional measures.

Wincor Nixdorf has expanded its services portfolio, and at Wincor World the entire offer of future-oriented services for banks and retail companies will be on display. One important topic is the Global Services Delivery Processes. Services from, for example, a call center are bundled at a central location and made available to customers all over Europe, enabling quick and expert support for banks and retail companies and rapid recovery times.
In order to simplify the selection and combination of individual product-related services, support pack offers have been developed. These offers bundle standardized services for a fixed price. The integrated concept approach envisions that every newly sold piece of hardware will be accompanied by an offer for manufacturer service, either as a support pack or as an individual service agreement.
Solution packages are part of the Managed Services portfolio. They extend from the operation of self-service systems to cash cycle management and all the way to the operation of the complete information and communications structure in a branch or store. The solution packages are modular and can be put together individually for each customer. Using the new connectivity box and a simple plug & play connection, Wincor Nixdorf can remotely monitor customer systems around the clock . Sources of error and faults are noticed immediately and can be rectified right away.
Outsourcing and consulting are also showcased at Wincor World. Here, Wincor Nixdorf is presenting management concepts and individually-tailored operating models that ensure higher quality and more innovative solutions for customers at optimized cost.
