Diebold Advances Fight Against ATM Card Skimming With Theft-Prevention Technology
New solutions designed to protect consumer information by obstructing ATM data theft devices

Diebold’s re-engineered ATM hardware and new service offering supports financial institutions’ security efforts by moving the focus from theft detection to protection
NORTH CANTON, Ohio, Nov. 3, 2011 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ — While criminals once targeted financial institutions for their currency, today’s advanced technologies have made consumer data a far more desirable payoff. In its continuous effort to remain vigilant in the fight against theft at the automated teller machine (ATM), Diebold, Incorporated (NYSE: DBD) is introducing a re-engineered bezel and the Opteva® BezelSentry(SM) Service to not only detect skimming activity, but to help prevent it.

The company has re-engineered its Opteva ATM hardware to support anti-skimming efforts with a new design for the bezel – the portion of the ATM containing the card slot and the surrounding area. The re-engineered bezel incorporates geometric fascia alterations, making it more difficult for perpetrators to attach a skimmer to its surface and is designed to eliminate the market inventory of card skimmers. The re-engineered bezel helps protect the integrity of the bezel during removal attacks and features a removal switch that will send an alarm to the alarm system notifying the financial institution of any attempt to remove the bezel.

In addition to the re-engineered card-reader bezel, Diebold is now offering the industry’s first interchangeable bezel service. Similar to a subscription service, the Opteva BezelSentry Service helps financial institutions stay one step ahead of would-be perpetrators by delivering pre-scheduled or emergency bezel changes to an individual ATM or an entire fleet.

“As skimming attempts continue to increase, the interchangeable bezel is an extremely valuable tool within our multi-layered security approach,” said W. Curt Tiettmeyer, vice president, ATM administration, Fifth Third Bank. “It provides us with an innovative solution to mitigate card skimming and enhance protection of the ATM channel.”

All shipped Diebold Opteva ATMs will be equipped with the new interchangeable bezel design. Diebold has been shipping terminals equipped with the new interchangeable bezel design since December 2010. Previously shipped Opteva terminals can be retrofitted with the re-engineered bezel. Future bezel replacements will be available with minimal impact on ATM uptime. The bezel upgrades are available across the global market for all motorized and dip card reader ATMs.

“The Opteva BezelSentry Service takes Diebold’s suite of anti-skimming solutions to a completely new level,” said Chuck Somers, vice president, ATM security and systems, Diebold. “We’ve helped financial institutions reduce ATM fraud for years by using multiple layers of technology to protect ATMs. By pushing the industry forward from detection to prevention, we’re leading the way to protect consumers from ever having to experience ATM data theft in the first place.”

The re-engineered bezel and the Opteva BezelSentry Service are just two components of Diebold’s comprehensive ATM security portfolio. In support of its commitment to a multi-layered ATM security approach, Diebold offers a robust ATM Security Protection Suite that consists of anti-skimming packages and an industry-leading monitoring service. The suite offers five levels of protection to proactively guard against increasingly sophisticated card-skimming attacks.

Wincor Nixdorf’s expanded security solution portfolio offers protection from high-tech thieves to counteract the growing number of manipulation attempts at self-service systems. The new module Anti-Skimming II and the use of optical monitoring technology mean that in the future, fraudulent attacks on automated teller machines can be effectively prevented. These new components are part of the extensive ProTect portfolio, which offers retail banks solutions for the comprehensive protection of their processes and external delivery channels.

The new Anti-Skimming II module thwarts attempts to steal card data at ATMs that take place when skimming devices are attached to the card entry slot and the customer’s PIN is stolen. The module recognizes a wide variety of skimmers when they are mounted on the ATM, and disrupts them in their attempts to read card data. If a suspicious device is detected, the system initiates a silent alarm, and follow-up actions, such as video monitoring and recording, can also be triggered.

The rising number of attacks on ATMs has also meant an increase in the variety of manipulation attempts. Optical Security Guard – Wincor Nixdorf’s optimal system monitoring solution – protects the new CINEO systems from a wide array of attacks. Intelligent recognition processes mean that criminal alterations to the device, such as keypad overlays, skimming devices, hidden or disguised cameras, or other changes – such as those that enable cash trapping – are identified immediately.

The company’s extensive portfolio of security solutions is rounded out by a consulting and service offer. On the basis of a detailed analysis of an ATM operator’s existing security processes, experts develop tailored proposals that can range from individual systems to the complete monitoring of all systems and all bank branches

Hardware and outsourced monitoring solutions deliver advanced levels of ATM protection

NORTH CANTON, Ohio, June 1, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ –Advancing its 150-year legacy of leadership in the financial and self-service and security industries, Diebold, Incorporated (NYSE: DBD) has introduced a comprehensive portfolio of skimming-protection solutions that help financial institutions mitigate card skimming, one of the largest threats against the automated teller machine (ATM) channel worldwide.

Designed to provide effective countermeasures against known skimming attack vectors, Diebold’s ATM Security Protection Suite consists of anti-skimming packages and an industry-leading outsourced monitoring service. The suite offers five levels of protection to proactively guard against increasingly sophisticated card-skimming attacks.

“As a trusted partner and leader in providing ATM security solutions, Diebold is committed to working with our financial-institution partners to help reduce financial losses and maintain confidence in the ATM channel as a whole,” said Chuck Somers, vice president, ATM security and systems, Diebold. “Diebold’s comprehensive portfolio of skimming protection solutions represent an advanced generation of technologies and the most innovative anti-skimming expertise in the industry.”

Skimmers are devices, often undetectable, that criminals attach to ATM card readers to record the information stored on a card’s magnetic stripe – information they subsequently use to create a cloned card and conduct a fraudulent transaction. Diebold’s ATM Security Protection Suite offers five levels of anti-skimming solutions to provide financial institutions with options based on the level of protection required. Level one offers basic protection and includes ATM card reader security features specially designed to deter skimmer attachment.

The second level includes Diebold’s award-winning skimming-detection technology that generates an alert – directed either to the branch alarm system or to the ATM network monitoring system – when a fraudulent device has been added to the terminal.

Protection levels three and four incorporate the latest and most innovative skimming countermeasure in the industry. By emitting an electromagnetic field to interfere with a skimmer’s ability to capture magnetic-stripe data in both motorized and dip card readers, this solution helps prevent the capture of card information. To offer this technology, Diebold has leveraged its self-service and security expertise and has also worked closely with TMD, a Netherlands-based developer of anti-skimming technology.

Protection level five also includes Diebold’s ATM SkimmingAlert Monitoring Service, affording customers maximum protection. This monitoring-based solution provides a real-time line of defense featuring an array of customized messaging and response strategies, such as e-mail alerts and text messages from the Diebold Monitoring Center. The service is currently available for financial institutions in North America.

“Diebold’s anti-skimming solutions are an integral part of Diebold’s ATM Security Protection Suite which takes a holistic approach to self-service security, delivering proactive risk management and protection,” Somers said. “Our goal is to provide peace of mind to financial institutions challenged by fraud at the ATM, by allowing them to mitigate risk, preserve their brand equity and maintain the confidence of their customers.”

The criminal act of card skimming results in the loss of billions of dollars annually for financial institutions and card holders. Card skimming threatens consumer confidence not only in the ATM channel, but in the financial institutions that own compromised ATMs as well. Understanding the constantly evolving threat to ATM security, Diebold advises financial institutions to deploy a multilayered approach to security at the self-service channel. The company stresses that anti-skimming solutions should constitute just one component in an overall ATM fraud prevention plan.

By Mohammad Ghazal

AMMAN – Police have urged the public to be cautious when using automated teller machines (ATMs), after 12 foreigners were arrested this week for committing ATM fraud.

The thieves, who are believed to have been operating in the country for about two weeks, installed card skimmers and small cameras on ATMs around Amman, using these devices to collect customers’ bank card information and withdraw money from their accounts. No figures were available on the amount of stolen money.

The 12 are believed to be part of a network of ATM thieves working in several countries in the region, said Public Security Department Spokesperson Major Mohammad Khatib.

The gang’s devices made it possible to read bank cards’ magnetic strips and record personal identification numbers (PINs) entered by bank clients, Khatib told The Jordan Times over the phone on Thursday.

The police raided the homes of the gang members, arrested them and seized their laptops, along with numerous fake bank cards on which they stored the stolen data and which they used to make withdrawals or purchases.

One of the 12 was arrested while in possession of about 40 fake cards, Khatib told The Jordan Times.

The officer urged citizens to be careful when using ATMs, to cover their hands when entering their PINs and to check for any suspicious devices before using the machine.

Buthaina Jadoun, whose information was stolen earlier this week by a card reader installed on one of the machines in Al Madina Al Munawara Street, said she lost JD600, all the money that was in her account at the time.

“Last Saturday, I went to withdraw some money from my bank’s branch near the 7th Circle area. As I withdrew JD40, I remembered my brother warning me to be careful when using an ATM as he works as a banker and had heard of a group of ATM thieves in town,” Jadoun, an editor at Hatem children’s magazine, told The Jordan Times.

After withdrawing the money, Jadoun said she was worried and decided to wait in her car to see if anybody came after her to use the machine.

“I saw many Jordanians using the machine after me, but there was a car in front of the machine where there were some blond men who were certainly non-Jordanians. I doubted that they were from the group my brother told me about, but I waited for a few minutes and then left,” she added.

On Tuesday, Jadoun said, she went to withdraw JD600 from her account, but could not.

“I entered the bank and they told me that JD600 were taken from my account in a purchase transaction conducted in a foreign country,” said Jadoun, adding that she will sue the bank if they do not compensate her.

An ATM expert at a local bank, who asked to remain unnamed, said there is no law that stipulates compensation for banks’ clients when money is stolen from their accounts through ATM fraud.

“It is up to the banks to compensate clients in such cases, especially if the withdrawal is from a machine affiliated with the bank the client uses,” said the source.

He recommended that card users change their passwords.

However, the expert said banks should take responsibility for compensating clients in cases of ATM fraud as banks in Jordan are not doing enough to raise awareness among their clients of how to avoid being victims of ATM fraud.

According to the source, some banks in Jordan use certain devices in their ATMs that cannot be tampered with. However, he said banks in Jordan need to pay more attention to raising awareness and installing modern devices that are unbreakable by ATM scammers.

Head of IT at Cairo Amman Bank Omar Yaqoub said the use of ATM skimmers is not only restricted to Jordan as many ATM fraud cases are reported across the world.

Yaqoub said the bank he works at introduced in June the “IrisGuard iBank Suite”, iris scanners, a new technology that uses cameras to obtain eye-prints from customers and then process transactions.

“This technique is reliable and there is no way for fraud and deception as it depends on the iris, and iris of each person is different from another,” he told The Jordan Times.

MANILA, Philippines – The Bankers Association of the Philippines reminded the public to be more careful when using of automated teller machines (ATM), after the a new scam was uncovered.
The scam involves capturing the stored personal identification number (PIN), card number, and other relevant information by skimming the magnetic strip of the ATM card using a specialized scanner. The captured information is then copied to produce a duplicate ATM card, allowing the scammers to make withdrawals without the card holder’s knowledge.

The call for added vigilance was triggered by a recent case of ATM fraud in the United Arab Emirates.

“The Philippine banks are taking all precautionary measures to ensure the safety of its clients,” said BAP. “Nonetheless, we are urging the people to take added care when using the ATM. By exercising vigilance, there will be lesser chance for users to be victimized by any fraud.”

To avoid being victimized by such fraud, BAP advised users to adhere to the safety guidelines in using the ATM:

1. Never divulge your PINs to other persons. Change your PIN if you think it has been compromised.

2. Cover the ATM keypad when entering your PIN. In case there is a hidden camera attached to the machine, covering the keypad with your other hand while entering the numbers could prevent the capture of your PIN.

3. Cover the screen while using the ATM. Ensure that the ATM screen is not seen by other people while you are making your transaction.

4. Use only ATMs that are in well-lit and located in secured areas.

5. Do not use ATMs that appear to have tampered card or cash slots. Report anything that seems suspicious to the corresponding bank immediately.

6. Be aware of your surroundings when using the ATM. Look around to check for suspicious characters lurking around the vicinity. Make sure that the person next in line to use the ATM is keeping a safe distance from you.

7. Do not entertain strangers who attempt to engage you in a conversation or pretend to offer help while you are transacting in an ATM. This person may just be after your PIN and card number.

The BAP has also issued an advisory to member banks to remind branch officers, employees and security guards to regularly inspect ATMs and booths for any unusual and non-bank installed devices, such as hidden cameras, cloning devices, and glued traps.

Bankers were also urged to instruct their security guards to maintain alertness and closely observe suspicious individuals within bank premises, particularly around ATM booths.

For assistance, ATM depositors are advised to immediately contact ATM hotline numbers which are normally posted on ATM machines.
